What Women Say After Taking the Abortion Pill

Updated: Oct 8

We’ve all heard the buzzwords.

Easy

Effective

Safer than Tylenol

Discreet

Quick

However, marketing terms don’t always deal with reality. Because The Women’s Center believes women deserve honest answers, we don’t shy away from sharing all the stories and voices of women who’ve had abortions. Every woman should be heard, and every experience can help the next person make an informed decision.

The Women’s does not charge for the services we provide, and we don’t financially benefit from your choice. We’re just committed to sharing the truth about your options, even the messy, uncomfortable answers, because we put YOU first here. And wherever you go, whatever you decide, that’s what you deserve.

Most Talked About Physical Side Effects of the Abortion Pill

While side effects vary from woman to woman, the most common include:

  1. Cramping and contractions*

  2. Heavy bleeding

  3. Fever

  4. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea

  5. Blood clots

*The first dose cuts off nutrients to the fetus so the pregnancy cannot develop, and the second begins the labor process.

Additional side effects include but are not limited to:

  1. Uterine infection

  2. Severe allergic reactions

  3. Vomiting of blood or material that looks like coffee grounds

  4. Muscle pain or stiffness

  5. Difficult, burning, or painful urination

  6. Difficulty breathing

  7. Fluid retention

  8. Puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue

  9. High blood pressure

  10. Joint and head pain

  11. Low potassium

  12. Lower back pain

  13. An overgrowth of the uterine lining

  14. An incomplete abortion

  15. Hospitalization

  16. Death – it’s extremely dangerous to take during an ectopic pregnancy

These side effects can increase if you take additional misoprostol pills. You can find the complete list of drug reactions here.

Do not take abortion pills if an intrauterine pregnancy has not been verified. We can provide an ultrasound at no cost.

What Women Most Often Say About Their Self-Managed Abortion Experience At Home

Remember those great marketing buzzwords we talked about? Those are words that women who have not taken the abortion pill use when describing it. It’s what we’ve all seen all over social media and from abortion pill online providers. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned about ordering abortion pills by mail because of the severe health and safety risks.

We take the time to listen to what women say online and in our doors, even when it’s hard.

  • No one prepared me for what I’d see.

  • It hurt way worse than I expected.

  • I was told to expect cramping, but I didn’t know my body would go into full-blown labor!

  • I thought I was going to bleed out. It was really scary to be all alone.

  • If I knew how far along I was, I may have chosen differently…

  • I really wish someone was with me. It was too much to deal with by myself.

  • It wasn’t at all quick. I had days of pain and kept passing blood clots.
